causes of conflict
Ryan-Bannerman (2012), describe conflict as an iceberg. The signs of conflict that we see (the part of the iceberg above the water) are often associated with low productivity, withdrawal, and fighting. However, as mentioned before, conflict is complex and multi-dimensional. A good leader will recognize that there is a lot more happening below the water (the bottom of the iceberg), within the organization and between teams and individuals. Therefore, it is very important to clarify the causes of conflict and understand that there may be more than one cause (Ryan-Bannerman, 2012).
"There is no single cause of conflict. Rather, conflict is context-specific, multi-causal and multi-dimensional and can result from a combination of factors" (GSDRC, 2013, "Understanding Violent Conflict", paragraph 1).
